The Old City bar at 319 Market St. that was GiGi and later 4 Fathers has been stripped to its bones and is being readied as Common Wealth, a bar featuring the Low Country cuisine of Charleston, S.C.
Joe Battista, previous chef for the catering company Cuisine 365 (which handles personal-chef services for the Sixers and Villanova Wildcats) and his sister-in-law Crystal Battista have tapped builder Tom Bury (who has done lots of work for Restaurant Impossible) to refashion the space. New will be bistro area beside the new front windows and an “inside/outside” bar window along the deck that runs alongside the building. (It just might be the largest outdoor space in Old City.)
Bury and crews also scooped out the basement to allow people taller than 5 feet to work down there. They will do catering out of the kitchen.
Interior look is going for intimacy: exposed brick walls, crown molding and custom woodwork.
Target opening is late April.
